ACP Delegates Witness Cultural Performances At Denarau

Delegates of the 3rd Summit of ACP Heads of State and Government have been witnessing cultural performances by the people of Fiji.

The landowners of Denarau from Narewa village yesterday (17/07) performed a traditional welcome ceremony that featured the presentation of mats, tabuas (whales teeth), yaqona (kava) and Fijian food.

The students of Queen Victoria School dressed in traditional outfit then performed a meke i iri (men’s fan dance) to entertain the delegates.

This morning (18/07/02) the delegates were shown a colourful performance displayed by the Shobna Chanel group at the opening session of the summit that was held at the Pro-Shop Lawn arena.

The group led by Shobna Chanel consists of a group of young Indo-Fijian women who dance to contemporary Fijian and Hindi music.

The young women performed two items incorporating Fijian, Indo-Fijian and Rotuman dancing and were dressed in a mixture of Fijian and Indo-Fijian clothing with masi (tapa) prints on them.

There was applause from the delegates and other invited guests present when the ladies performed showing how they appreciated the dances.
